Coffee is undeniably the most favorite drink in the world. Each year, there are over 500 billion cups consumed. Coffee is also one of the world’s most traded commodities as it also accounts for 1/3 of tap water consumption. To support this high degree of consumption, many countries are engaged in growing coffee plants.

Historically, coffee originated in Ethiopia. Before 1000 AD, coffee could only be obtained in the forests in that region. Eventually, it was introduced to the Arab regions, Northern America, Brazil, India, and other countries.

Today, because of high degree of coffee consumption, coffee is grown in more than 70 nations around the world. Although coffee thrives in the tropics, which is endowed with rich soil and ample rain, technology enables other countries to grow coffee.

Today, the largest coffee producer in the world is Brazil, accounting for 27% of the global yearly production. Brazil engaged in coffee growing since 1727. In 1907, the country has become the top producer of coffee bean in the world, and has employed over five million Brazilians.

Next to Brazil is Colombia, which produces around 16% of the total global production. In Colombia, coffee is grown in tree-lined mountains. The process of growing and harvesting has never been changed throughout the years. This is different to how other nations grow coffee.

Another large coffee grower is Indonesia. Since the 17th Century, Indonesia has already been known to produce coffee for export. Today, it is among the countries engaged in growing coffee plants to produce high quality coffee for export.
